What is an Impacted Canine Tooth?
The condition known as “canine impaction” occurs when a cuspid does not erupt in its proper position in the dental arch, instead remaining trapped under the gums or emerging in an abnormal position within the jaw.
When left untreated, an impacted canine in Massachusetts can lead to a range of oral health issues, including damaging adjacent teeth, the formation of cysts or infections that can damage surrounding bone and gum tissues, cause bite misalignment, and affect smile appearance.
Early treatment (including impacted canine bracers, surgery, or a combination of both) is crucial, as addressing the issue promptly prevents current and future complications, supports long-term oral health, and contributes to a healthier smile which translates into improved confidence.
Why Do Canine Teeth Become Impacted?
Canine impaction happens for a variety of reasons and typically involves a combination of different factors:
Physical Obstructions
Impaction can be caused by pathologic conditions that block the eruption of cuspids, including extra teeth or unusual growths on the soft tissue of the gums.
Lack of Space in the Dental Arch
Overcrowding caused by other teeth misalignment, smaller jaw size, or tooth-size imbalance can prevent canines from erupting into their proper place (or at all).
Primary (Baby) Teeth Issues
The eruption path of the cuspids can be blocked if baby teeth fail to fall out on time. Also, their premature loss can cause misalignment and lead to impaction.
Abnormal Development of Canine Tooth
Developmental abnormalities of the cuspid can cause impaction. These include tooth root dilaceration, ankylosis, and the irregular position of the developing canine tooth bud.
Genetic Predisposition
Individuals with certain hereditary traits that cause dental crowding, such as a smaller jaw size or hyperdontia, can be naturally predisposed to develop impacted canines.
Environmental Factors
In some instances, impacted canines can be caused by trauma to the cuspid area of the jaw, poor oral hygiene, and even prolonged orthodontic treatment (without proper teeth extraction).
Our Streamlined Process Ensures Success
To ensure every impacted canine tooth treatment goes as smoothly as possible, we’ve developed a comprehensive process that leaves nothing to chance. Our specialists start with a thorough digitally-assisted checkup to pinpoint the exact position of the problematic tooth.
Once they have all the details, they move on to developing a fully personalized treatment plan, which may involve impacted canine teeth braces or surgical intervention. If the latter is the case, we have local/general anaesthesia and IV sedation options available for a painless procedure.
Finally, at every stage of the process, you can expect clear, informative, and honest communication from our team, whether it’s general questions about impacted canine surgery in Central Massachusetts or proven tips for speedy recovery at home.

We Rely on Proven Treatments for Impacted Canines

Expose and Bond Procedure
This procedure involves using impacted canine braces to gradually guide the cuspid into its proper space. First, we use braces to create enough room for the canine to emerge. Then, we uncover the tooth and attach a delicate bracket with a chain, anchoring it to the braces. Finally, your orthodontist will periodically adjust the chain to help the canine emerge and align properly.
Replacing a Canine Tooth With a Dental Implant
Whenever possible, we will prioritize saving your natural tooth. However, if that is not an option (typically due to severe decay, misalignment, or infection), the best course of action is to remove the impacted canine and replace it with a custom-made implant. This solution is designed to look and function completely natural, restoring your bite and giving you back a confident, healthy smile.
Surgical Uprighting Second Molars
Similar to the “Expose & Bond”, the uprighting procedure begins with braces to create space, followed by a surgical repositioning and stabilization of the impacted tooth in the more upright position. Note that a bone graft may be necessary to support the cuspid, but that shouldn’t scare you – it’s a routine procedure that our doctors have performed countless times.
