Facial trauma refers to an injury to the head, neck, mouth, or face. Oral surgeons are experts in managing these conditions to ensure the oral and maxillofacial structures heal properly with aesthetically pleasing results. Facial trauma of any kind can be stressful, but the team at Premier Oral, Dental Implant & Facial Surgery focuses on relieving pain while providing a positive treatment experience that promotes patient safety and comfort.

In addition to providing in-office care for non-life-threatening conditions, Dr. Garibyan and Dr. Kuang are on call and respond to emergency trauma cases at Elliot Hospital. Our board-certified oral surgeons are also affiliated with Nashoba Valley Medical Center and Tufts Medical Center to help manage these cases. If you or your child have experienced facial trauma, contact our office in Massachusetts immediately and we will see you as soon as possible.

If your injury is life-threatening, go to the nearest emergency room to receive treatment from the oral surgeon on call.

Types of Facial Trauma Injuries

A facial trauma injury refers to any injury that affects the soft tissues or bones of the oral and maxillofacial regions. Facial injuries are unexpected and can result from an accident in the workplace, playing sports, a vehicle accident, an animal attack, domestic violence, or an accidental fall. Regardless of the cause of injury, it’s crucial to receive attention from a specialist as soon as possible.

These types of injuries are considered to be facial trauma injuries that may require emergency care from an oral & maxillofacial surgeon:

  • Lacerations to the head or neck
  • Intraoral lacerations
  • Fractured or broken facial bones
  • Avulsed (knocked-out) teeth

Treating Facial Trauma Injuries

The right treatment for you will depend on the location and severity of the injury. When you come to our office, we will take 3D scans to assess the skeletal and tissue structure of your head and face. These detailed images help us assess any further damage and create a treatment plan with great precision. If you are experiencing pain or anxiety, we will discuss anesthesia or sedation and administer the appropriate choice for your needs.

Every facial trauma case is unique and your treatment will be customized to fit your needs. Facial cuts may require stitches or dissolvable sutures placed inside the mouth. If a bone is broken, we can use plates or screws to reposition the bone and allow it to heal properly. Medication may be a part of your treatment plan to prevent or treat infection.

If you have a knocked-out tooth, place the tooth in whole milk or saliva and see us as soon as possible, ideally within 30 minutes. Only handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, you may gently rinse it with water but do not use soap, toothpaste, or any cleaning solution. The tooth must stay moist at all times. If you do not have saliva or milk to transport it in until you arrive at our office, keep it in your mouth next to your cheek. If we are unable to save the tooth, we can discuss your options for replacement such as a dental implant.
