Screening and Treatment for Oral Cancer and Disease

Oral pathology is the study and diagnosis of diseases that affect the jaw, mouth, and face. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the health experts that manage these conditions. Oral cancer or disease can affect anyone and the sooner it is detected and diagnosed, the better the outcome.

As part of your oral health examination during your first visit, we will look for any abnormalities that may indicate the presence of cancer or disease. To schedule your consultation with Dr. Garibyan or Dr. Kuang, contact Premier Center for Oral, Dental Implant & Facial Surgery today.

Signs of Oral Cancer or Disease

There are many conditions that fall under the category of oral pathology and possible symptoms are diverse. When you attend regular dental visits, your general dentist will also examine your mouth for any abnormalities and refer you to a specialist if a pathological process is suspected. Even if you do not see or feel any abnormality, there still may be a condition present that a dental specialist can identify. Contact our office for an appointment as soon as possible if you notice any of these signs:

  • Red or white patches in the mouth
  • A sore spot that fails to heal and/or bleeds easily
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • A lump or thickening portion of the lining of the mouth
  • Chronic sore throat or hoarseness

You may notice a lump, sore, or abnormality on the lips, cheeks, palate, tongue, or gums. We recommend performing a self-examination monthly to be on the lookout for changes in your mouth. Your mouth is one of your body’s most important warning systems and receiving treatment promptly for any changes can benefit your overall health.

Treatment for Oral Disease

During your first visit, we will take 3D scans of your mouth and face and talk about your oral health concerns. Dr. Garibyan or Dr. Kuang will walk you through your treatment options and discuss your options for anesthesia or sedation if oral surgery is necessary. We value your comfort and want you to feel as comfortable as possible at each step.

Treatment for oral diseases varies depending on their location and severity. In most cases, we will perform a biopsy on the affected area and send a sample to a pathology lab. After we receive the results, we can discuss the next steps for treatment.

Tumors, cysts, or lesions are often removed in our office under IV sedation. In the event of aggressive benign lesions or tumors, you will undergo surgery in an operating room under general anesthesia to have it removed. Your treatment may involve medication to treat infection or to help manage symptoms.
