Improve Chin Definition for Health and Cosmetic Benefits

Chin augmentation, also known as genioplasty, is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping the bony and soft tissue contours of the chin. This treatment is ideal if you have an underprojected chin and desire a more prominent chin. Chin augmentation can also be performed for patients with obstructive sleep apnea to decrease snoring, as moving the chin forward can help open the airway.

If you would like a more defined, prominent chin or suffer from sleep apnea, we invite you to contact Premier Center for Oral, Dental Implant & Facial Surgery today. Dr. Garibyan and Dr. Kuang are skilled oral surgeons who offer a wide range of oral surgery and cosmetic procedures that can improve your health and restore your confidence.

The Difference Between Chin Augmentation and Chin Implants

Both chin augmentation and chin implants are cosmetic procedures that change the shape of the chin. However, there are differences between these treatments. Chin implants are silicone shapes that your surgeon inserts under the skin to make the chin wider or longer. Chin augmentation involves reshaping the existing bone of the chin, jaw, and surrounding soft tissues.

Some patients prefer chin augmentation over implants because the augmentation procedure involves using their own bone instead of foreign substances. Other patients prefer implants because the surgery is less invasive. During your first visit, we will explore these options and help you select the right choice for you.

Is Genioplasty Right for Me?

Chin surgery may be the right surgery for you if:

  • Your chin is recessed or weak
  • You feel your facial features lack proportion
  • You suffer from obstructive sleep apnea
  • You feel self-conscious about your chin’s shape
  • You want more definition of the neck and jawline

The ideal candidate for chin augmentation is a physically healthy individual with realistic expectations for cosmetic surgery. The results from chin surgery are permanent and can be life-changing for those who have struggled with their chin image or sleep apnea for many years. To see if you are a good candidate for genioplasty, contact our office for a consultation.

Chin Augmentation Surgery

Prior to your surgery, a board-certified oral & maxillofacial surgeon will meet with you for a consultation to discuss your goals and treatment options. We may take 3D scans of your face and will talk about your options for anesthesia. Chin augmentation is often performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia to promote your safety and comfort. We will provide you with instructions to follow before and after your surgery for a smooth and easy procedure.

Your surgeon will make incisions based on the surgical approach. Some incisions are made inside the mouth so there are no visible scars afterward, while others are made under the chin. Your surgeon will move the chin bone forward and use plates or screws to hold it in its new position. Bony structures or nearby soft tissues may be reshaped depending on the details of your treatment.

Some chin augmentation surgeries involve placing a chin implant directly on the chin bone to enhance its definition. Any incisions will be closed and you will rest until the anesthesia wears off. This procedure takes about one hour to complete.

After Chin Surgery

You can expect some swelling in the chin region for about a week. If dissolvable sutures were placed, they will dissolve between 5–7 days and you do not need to return to have them removed. If stitches were placed on the outside of the skin, you will return to have them removed one week after your procedure.
Your final results from surgery will be visible once the swelling fully subsides, which can take several weeks. The results from chin augmentation are permanent and you can enjoy your newly contoured chin for life!
