Bone Grafting

Restore Bone in the Jaw and Face

Teeth are important to eat and speak, but they also contribute to your overall health. When a tooth is missing, the jaw bone underneath starts to deteriorate because it does not receive stimulation from a tooth root. Bone loss can affect the shape of facial features and make it difficult for some people to receive a dental implant. Through a variety of bone grafting treatments, our oral surgeons can repair lost bone.

Dr. Garibyan and Dr. Kuang offer bone grafting to repair facial trauma injuries, following tooth extraction, to prepare for dental implants, or to treat other oral and maxillofacial conditions. Bone grafting treatment is often combined with other oral surgery care to maximize results. Contact Premier Center for Oral, Dental Implant & Facial Surgery to learn more about bone grafting in Groton, MA, or to schedule your consultation.

How Does Bone Grafting Work?

A dental bone graft is used if the jaw bone has deteriorated or requires more density to support an implant. Bone grafts can come from bone samples from your own body (autografts), a cadaver (allografts), another species such as a cow (xenografts), or created from synthetic materials.

Your oral surgeon will place the grafting material where more bone is needed. Through your body’s natural healing process, bone will heal over the grafting site, resulting in adequate bone. During your first visit to our office, we will take 3D scans to assess your facial structure. If bone grafting is a part of your treatment, we will walk you through the process so you know exactly what to expect.

PRP/PRF treatment can be combined with bone grafting. When applied to the grafting site, these natural growth factors speed up the healing process for a faster recovery. Ask us about your PRP/PRF options during your first visit

Types of Bone Grafting Treatments

At Premier Center for Oral, Dental Implant & Facial Surgery, we offer many bone grafting solutions and will determine the right option for your specific needs. The treatment area, amount of bone needed, and details of your treatment plan will determine the right procedure for you.

Sinus Lift

Some people need dental implants in the upper jaw but lack sufficient jaw bone to support them. In these cases, a sinus lift is performed to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw. Also called a sinus augmentation, this treatment involves your surgeon lifting the sinus membrane and inserting a bone graft. Once healed, there will be adequate upper jaw bone to successfully support an implant.

Socket Preservation

After a tooth is extracted, you can replace the missing tooth with a dental implant. Some patients do not plan on immediately restoring the tooth or lack sufficient bone for the implant. In these cases, socket preservation is recommended. Your surgeon will insert grafting material into the empty tooth socket following extraction. This preserves the size and shape of the socket, making future implant placement much easier.

Major Bone Grafting

In cases where significant portions of the jaw or facial bone have been affected, such as facial trauma injuries, disease, or birth defects, major bone grafting is performed. This procedure involves adding a large amount of bone to the area where it is needed and is more extensive than a standard dental bone graft. Bone to restore these larger defects is often harvested from the patient’s own body, such as the skull, hip, or knee.

Soft Tissue Grafts

In addition to requiring sufficient bone, dental implants also require a healthy amount of gum tissue. Our surgeons can use soft tissue grafts to increase the amount of tissue in the mouth, increasing the longevity and success rate of a dental implant. Soft tissue grafts work similarly to bone grafts. A tissue sample is harvested, often from your own palate or a tissue bank, and is placed where more tissue is needed.
